3/16" or 4mm diameter Thin heating cable mats were designed to save on labour with floor warming applications under tile. Most popular within the do-it-yourself DIY market and often used by ceramic tile installers and electricians. They are especially recommeded when installing in-floor heating over existing concrete floors since this type of installation is very time consuming and frustrating when loose cable is used. Thin heating mats can be used alone or along with thin heating cables on the same job if necessary and are ideal for rectangular areas. When choosing a heating mat you must always select a size which is the same size or smaller than the heated area - never larger.
Floor warming is becoming accepted as a proven means of heating under other flooring such as laminate, engineered hardwood and vinyl flooring. Care must be taken when installing thin heating mats to ensure they are not damaged until they are covered in a protective layer of mortar or self-leveling cement.
Mat sizes are shown using nominal coverage and target heating area. Nominal coverage reflects how much area is covered by the 18" mats if they were to be installed right next to each other. Heated area is the area they are designed to heat if mats are installed 2" apart in order to provide perfectly even spacing of heating elements. You should therefore choose a mat based on it's heated area coverage but may use the same mat for a slightly smaller area closer to its nominal coverage. Call us if you are unsure of which mats to order for your project.
